2. Timeline

1880 (circa)Pavilion (Shepherds Hut) built. At some stage, Shepherds accommodation converted to Home (now Bar) and Away (now Kitchen) changing rooms. Coat Hooks remain in place!

1920s/30sWhist Drives and Moonlight Dances held at cricket ground.
Date unknownGas lighting installed using bottled LPG and mantles. No doubt candles, oil or Tilley provided lighting in earlier years. Gas mantle frames and piping remain in place. LPG also provided fuel for tea boiler gas ring and gas stove!
1938AGM. Appeal for more players as future of CHCC in doubt. (Source Western Gazette 28 Jan 1938).
Date unknownPavilion extended at rear to provide beer store, equipment room (with sink), earth closet (WC) and urinal. All remain in place.
1939-1945Pavilion used as Home Guard Post. Negligent Discharge (ND) from 0.303 rifle shown by witness mark in front of dartboard. (Source Norman Hart).
1950Revival of Dinner and Dance at the Plume of Feathers Sherborne. Fourty year presentation made.
Date unknownPavilion extended south side to provide mower shed. Now demolished.
Date unknownWater supply provided from what is now the Butterfly Farm. Terry Deacon’s job as a youth was to turn on/off the water each home game!
1964/65Home changing room converted to Bar (Compton Club). Felix Austin (Chair) takes the lead in recognising the long-term future of the Club requires a firm financial footing which the Bar can provide and does so over many years. (Source Bryan Parsons).
1960s lateAway changing Room converted to Kitchen.
1969s lateNew Changing rooms provided in the area that is now occupied by the Casely Pavilion. The Changing rooms were the re-cycled Stewards hut from the Larkhill (Yeovil) Greyhound track!
1970Compton Park (Cricket Ground) secured by Sixty-year lease at a rent of £5.00 per annum payable on the first of January. Subsequently became a bottle of port at the Annual Dinner and Dance. (Source Lease documents held by Terry Deacon) It is understood that the lease was necessary as a condition of a loan to deliver the Toilet Block (see below).
1972CHCC enters Haig Cup. Dorset semi-finalists 1975, 1981 and 1982.
1974Toilet Block built. Earth closet et al enclosed but remain!
1975Dinner and Dance takes place at the Digby Hall Sherborne. CHCC Bar utilised for this event and for many more years to come.to provide the vital source of financial income for the Club. Felix Austin’s legacy is borne out – see entry for 1964/65.
1976Club enters and win Sport for All six aside indoor cricket competition at Sherborne Boys School.
1976/77Club enters National six aside indoor cricket competition. Dorset Champions and South West runner up. Indoor cricket features into the 1980s.
1977Large safe transported in a “horse box” from Sherborne Council Offices to CHCC to be used as a secure stowage for trophies and bar stock. Techniques drawn from Stonehenge were also employed!
1977Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee – oak trees planted in south west corner of the ground.
1980s earlyElectricity supply connected. The demise of the Gas Mantle was a driving factor.
1980/81Children’s Play Park/area constructed. Safety fence used at a later date for an early iteration of Nets.
1981Compton founding member of Mid Wessex cricket League. Winners Division 1 1981/1982. Cup Winners 1982. Champion cup winners against pick of the league 1981.
1980sTelephone line installed.
1991Changing Rooms with showers built adjacent to WC Block. Design provided for new Clubhouse to be adjoined at a later date?
1990s earlyCompton join Dorset Cricket league
1990s midAll weather pitch installed.
1990s midMachinery Garages built.
2002Permanent water supply to square.
2004Compton achieve Dorset Premier League status.
2004Compton Park purchased (and Lease revoked) from Rev John Goodden at a cost of £25K. Funded by subscriptions from past/present/future members and their families. Also donations from various local clubs/societies/charities/Councils/individuals,
